The Greatest Churaumi Aquarium

More beautiful, bigger, greener, the Churaumi aquarium is no less than the second largest in the world. It was built not only to show off the wonders of the tropical waters of Okinawa, but also to serve as a study center. The aquarium is also part of a huge park with a traditional village, museums and a portion of pristine coastline, with its beaches and mangroves. This aquarium is in itself a good reason to go north of the island of Okinawa. It has tanks of unsurpassed size and unique species. It is a must visit if you are in the area.

A fascinating world of marine life unfolds before the spectators, with more than 800 colonies of different corals. In a giant tank called Kuroshio Sea with more than 7,500 cubic meters of water that has become the largest glass screen in the world: it measures 8.2 meters high by 22.5 meters long. And it has a thickness of 60 centimeters. These figures alone already describe the magnitude of the project. Inside this tank lives the largest fish in the world, the whale shark, and the first raised successfully in captivity. In Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, the seas of Japan have been recreated in all their natural beauty to a depth of about 1,000 meters, paying special attention to factors such as light as well as water quality and clarity.
